I just bought a battery charger/maintainer. My question is can you charge the battery under the hood or do you need to acces it in the trunck.
I noticed the positive acces pin under the hood, but no negative side...Is there one under the hood?

Thanks

You need to charge via the positive and negative terminals under the bonnet (hood)
it sounds like you have found the positive terminal, the negative is just to the right of it.
It looks like a long bolt with a hex head and no thread, it's literally within 3 or 4 inches of the positive terminal.

It's on the right side of the driver's side shock tower maybe 6-8 inches to the right from the red positive cover. It's not painted.

Only the whole fscking chassis. Pick anything shiny/metal.

Seriously guys... Are most folks here unable to understand the simplest component of their cars? WTF?

No, Nah-Chet! Now that I drive a MINI, Mrs. six only drives the Bimmer to the nearest nail salon and return. Well, I do let her go to Neiman Marcus now and then.

This way you are ruining your battery since the amount you charge will not be recognized!

Not strictly true, nothing "recognises" the charge.

The reason for the poles under the bonnet, is because batteries give off hydrogen gas when charging, and when you disconnect/reconnect the charging leads there is normally a spark.
This spark, even if tiny, is enough to blow the top off the battery and cover you in sulphuric acid, not to mention the flash burns from the gas igniting.

As the meercat says "simplessss"

Yes it is true on the E60!

If you charge the battery directly, not through the poles under the hood, the computer doesn't recognizes it and will still act as if the battery is uncharged. This leads to a memory effect fast.
The power system on the E60 needs to recognize the charge and therefore it needs to be done through the poles under the hood, which are actually NOT designed for recharging, they are there for jump starting.
