Audible signs of the starter motor
We have a 2010 e60 with N52k (and 50,000 miles)
I replaced the starter motor today.
It had audible signs that it just didn't sound right when turning over the motor.
After installing a new Bosch starter and turning over the engine, I was surprise at the RPM speed at which the new starter motor cranked the engine.
I'd say the new motor was cranking at 50% faster speed than the old starter motor.
Make sure you do this job with a new PCV hose from the valve cover to the intake. It was impossible to get the old one off (so I broke it off).
While I was next to the starter, I replaced the crank sensor for good measure and sprayed a bunch of Mass Air flow sensor cleaner on the fuel injectors inside the intake.
I wish I had ordered a new throttle body green, rubber gasket.
Now the starter cranks so fast I have to take my hand off the start button quicker than usual so the starter clutch doesn't screech.
Question:
After I put in the starter motor, it idles at 650, but I notice after 8 seconds it now drops to 600 and then rises back to 650. It didn't do that before I installed the starter.
Is the drop in engine RPM's characteristic of a vacuum leak?
