My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.
Thumbs up

So I just recently changed my oil in my 545i, Thanks to Daytona for that great write-up!

I filled her up with 8.5 qts of Mobil 1 0W-40 (this is ACEA A3 certified, the regular 5w-30 isn't), but my question regards to the oil drain plug on the filter housing. I was unable to get it loose so I just took off the filter housing, had quite a bit of oil come out, but cleaned it up and all is well. My question is does is matter that I did not change the oil ring on that plug even though I didn't remove it?

I've driven the car around and found no leaks whatsoever, in fact I feel as if it is running smoother than it was before.

So what's your guys take on it?

you may have too much oil in there. Double check.

Huh? I completely drained the oil pan the oil filter housing; I even ran about .5L through it just to help get out any residual "gunk". I've checked the dipstick and it's fine, the line is just at the max fill line.

I don't know if my old oil was never changed at the dealership (my maintenance program ended in march), but I feel as if the car starts smoother and the car just runs smoother all around. I took it out today for a couple 100+ mph sprints and it felt like a champ.

Sorry. I misread your post. (I thought you said that you could not remove the main oil drain plug and instead drained the oil thru the hole for the filter housing which I did not believe would drain all the oil. My bad.)

if that were the case, most of the oil would not drain out. just whats in the filter housing.

Just as an update, the car has been running fine. No problems noticed whatsoever and I have been driving her pretty hard lately.

Though next time I will def need to get that 6mm hex to avoid the over spill mess and clean up.

Cheers for this DIY Neil, I am buying oil for my gearbox and diff tomorrow pay day so it will come in very useful

One question, did you torque the drain and fill plugs up or just do them tight?

Thanks

Gday cip and welcome,

You ask for the torque specs, which I did do, I tighten the filter casing to 18 ft. lb. and hand tightened the drain plug. However, you say your changing the gearbox and diff oil which I do not know if these are the same specs; I highly doubt it.

Do you have an automatic or manual? I don't believe the manual gearbox oil needs to be changed, ever, unless you were to put some sort of aftermarket oil in it.
