I wanted to see how much the E60 stock manual shifter knob weigh (it's 3.0 oz), so I pulled it off. I discovered a really easy and safe method of knob removal, with no damage or injury risk.
  • Position the front seats mid-way (not too far forward or backward) - both at same position. You will need to plant a foot in each front foot-well in a next step.
  • Position front seat backs all the way up/forward. You will be resting a shoulder on each seat back.
  • LHD cars, put gear selector in 6. RHD cars, put gear select in 2. (Point gear selector away from the steering wheel)
  • Facing the rear of the car, plant a foot in each foot-well, and rest your shoulders on the front seat backs.
  • The gear selector is now between your legs, with a shoulder leaning on each front seat back and you're facing the rear seat bench.
  • Grasp shift knob with your hands, with one hand over the other hand. Do not twist knob. Do not attempt to bend the gear selector rod. Pull firmly on the knob. It just "clicks" off for me. Do not use brute force. If it does not come off the first time, try again with a little more force.
No busted nose, face, eye-wear, rear view mirror, overhead console, etc.

Installation is easy: place knob on gear selector rod, push onto rod, turn the knob slowly and gently so that the tongue in the knob fits into the groove in the gear selector rod. Press down until a "click" is felt.

I want to go with part 25117896886 (Gearshift knob,leather/M plaque/6-speed) at 6 oz / 170 g and 0.8 in / 2 cm shorter than stock:
