You need to starve the engine of air to stop it (or try to stall it if you have an manual). My wifes old diesel mondeo did this, snapped the camshaft in 5 places and bent all the valves...the engine had over revved so much the tacho needle got stuck pointing straight down. The turbo's compressor housing was half full of oil...not good.
Got it running again tho, and its still going as far as i know....

The Car has 97,000 miles on it.

I changed the crankcase breather. The old one had the "loo roll" filter in it. The new one didn't, it is just an empty breather.

Still getting the same problem..... I put another half litre in the engine and 15 miles later - "Engine oil level is at minimum". I didn't see any smoke this time though.

And still no oil leaks where I park the car.

Yeeehaa, this may sound daft, and i don't want to insult your intelligence, but you are checking the oil level on the dipstick and not just relying on the idrive? A broken sensor could give false readings etc etc.
All that oil must be going somewhere tho, if it is not leaking but being consumed by the engine (by the turbo or breather etc.) then it won't be long before you start getting dpf errors due to the excessive smoke the engine will be spewing out (you won't see it at the tailpipe as the dpf will be doing its job...till it clogs).
You need to get this looked at bro....

Gav900, yes I have been checking the oil at the dipstick. Looks like I'm gonna have to drop it in and expect a bill I suppose.

I'm getting really ticked off now because I fricken love my E60 M sport, it's fully loaded, has all the bells and whistles and I don't want to get rid of it.

sounds pretty nasty... don't want to be in your situation

wish you luck mate, drop it in at the dealer and let us know what happens - it will be valuable for all of us here to know what was the culprit

+1 How would you do this? Trying to 'manual' it with an automatic would probably only kill the torque converter?

How would you starve the engine of air in our E60's (besides using a carbondioxide extinguisher)?

I put 0W 40 in my E39 M5 instead of 10W 60 and it burnt it off like water! Car burnt off very little proir.

Probably 1L every 1K miles.

Id start by swopping out the wrong oil.

Problem was it continued to burn oil, although at a slower rate for 2 years before it settled again.

He's not getting 15 miles per litre, there's something definetly amiss there...

To stop a diesel engine running away with itself you need to block/choke the air intake. On the e60 i would pull off the flexi tube going from the air box to the front of the car and hold something hard and flat against the square opening(not your hand!)

Just to keep an update on this topic:

I drove 25 miles today (24 hrs after fitting a new crankcase breather) and the car hasn't asked for oil,,,, maybe i was hasty yesterday after fitting it. Today things seem to be settled down now. Although I was driving it like I was a shofer for Miss Daisy.

I'll make a post the next time it requires oil,, hopefully I won't post on this topic again.

Up until this incidence I have never had to top up my oil between oil changes.

One other thing - The oil breather filter can be changed without removing the strut brace (dam those torx bolts), but it is a tight squeeze.
