My factory warranty recently expired and was wondering if it's worth buying extended coverage. I have only 27,000 miles and the car has been problem free since purchase - however I expect that my brakes will have to be replaced soon. Any recommendations would be appreciated - thx

Get the extended warranty. Mine isn't a CPO and so far I spent about a thousand dollars on a few repairs in about half a year. My car is just 37,800 miles on it.

I got the 2OP extended warranty (100 mi + 2 years) but I changed my brakes to M5 set so they're not covered. It's the engine/power train that I'm worried about.
If you plan to own the car for 50K + miles- get it. Extended service/maintenance warranty is different and cost less than 2OP.

To be eligible for this program, the client must be the original owner and the vehicle must still be covered under the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty at the time of enrollment. Client benefits of the Original Owner Protection Program (2OP) include:

Program backing by BMW of North America
2 year/50,000-mile peace of mind protection (takes affect at expiration of BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty)
Scope of coverage like the Certified Pre-Owned BMW Vehicle Program
Includes BMW Roadside Assistance
Use of original BMW new or authorized remanufactured parts
No vehicle inspection required

Since your original warranty has expired contact your SA to find out if you still qualify for 2OP.

I just purchase a used vehicle so I guess I can not get an extended warranty from BMW but are there any alternative companies that offer a decent warranty plan that anyone can recommend?

Mercury Insurance offers a Platinum Plan that is excellent. http://www.autowarrantybroker.com/ for a quote.

Since I'm not putting many miles on my car (600 per month), is it better to go one of the alternative insurance providers(AW since their options are longer term(5 years)?
Also, are regular maintainence items such as breaks(rotors and pads) normally covered under extender warranties?

Keep in mind that even the best 3rd party warranties often 'cap out' at $3000 - $4000 - I was very surprised to learn that, and its not often easy to find out before hand. - a 5 year waranty that cost $2000 and capps out at a max of 4K isnt worth it in my opinion.

Brakes are not covered under warranty. They are covered with an extended maintenance program.
