you will know when the clay bar is toast.

it breaks apart, its completely a darker color than when you first had it.

typically what we do at the shop is break it into 4 pieces (200 gram bar) then I use it once for a rough car, if its not too bad a few times.

then it goes into the trash.

we carry 2 a fine one and a med grade one.

good to know, i have a blue one and its kinda of a darker blue right now.. maybe its time for a new one.. oye

 

i usually stop using it when theres too much grit inside the bar or it doesn't warm up and losses its malleable-ness

 

Maybe mine is bad then, I've had mine for about 7 years. I have no idea what color it started out as but it is black.

Good thing I never used it on my black cars.

I tried a clay bar on a little corner of my car to see what would happen and it stripped the wax off and looked really bad. I stil have that spot showing in the sun on the roof of my car and I'm afraid to even use the clay on the rest of my car. It almost seems like it just yanked the finish off my car!!? Maybe I'm paranoid or not doing it right.

 

A new bar?

1. Wash your car thoroughly.
2. Dry your car thoroughly.
3. Use the clay-bar with enough lubricant like quick detailer or water with shampoo.
4. Fold over frequently.

The clay bar is non abrasive and although it should strip all the crap, old wax and dirt, it should never damage your paint.
You have to polish and wax your car afterwards though.
