Did someone say salt?? This is 15 minutes on the roads in MN during the winter. Welcome to my nightmare.

I go to a car wash a couple times a week. I'd rather deal with some light swirls/scratches from the car wash than deal with rust.

Guy, that's just wrong to treat your baby like that..

Even with X drive, I leave her in the garage even if there is a hint of snow - why risk it if you don't have to.

My bimmer is my daily driving car, not much I can do about winter. I do take time to clean my car at least one's a week. I have the benefit of having a heated garage and hot water. Yes, I clean my car in the garage. Maybe i should get a beater car for winter.

Risk? Risk what? You mean it's ultimately dangerous to drive in snow ?

That salt picture was horrifying. I'm lucky we can still enjoy the real winter here and the roads are not much salted.
During the "real winter time", let's say january to march, the roads are just pure snow covered. The salt is used more in southern parts of Finland. But not that much like in that pic!

I plan to do the usual:
1. Keeping the car in several wax layers (AutoGlym Super Resin Polish + AutoGlym Liquid Hardwax + 2 x Presta Best Wax at the time)
2. Wash weekly

Road condition today:

Will get my car waxed in a week or so.

But otherwise the best care for any car is to drive it.

So this will be my first winter for my E60, and I was just wondering how some people were going to be dealing with most of the car washes being shut down due to the cold, road salt build up, and other forms of dirt getting on the car. Would the dealers take care of it if I brought it in for the complimentary wash?

The reason I ask is because I hear alot of car washes aren't 4WD-friendly so I wouldn't want to take it there. As for me washing the car, I guess I would need to read up on how to properly clean it, including drying it off, possibly waxing it (I know you have to rub in a certain direction, use "this" for "that") and I still wish I learned that as soon as I got the car during the summer.

But I saw another E60 at the neighborhood Walgreen's, probably a 550, and it was just shining, where as I came home a couple of nights ago to where it looks like it hasn't been washed since....mid-July. Sad, I know. But the one week I'm home, I'll take care of it.

So how would I go about doing it without ruining the paint, etc.?
You really should get familiar with www.autopia.org.
And especially the guide parts, like this article about proper washing and cleaning techniques.

Shortly, use:
- lots of water
- two bucket method
- a real sheepskin mitt (I wouldn't go back to anything else anymore)
- a good lubricant (soap)
- high quality microfiber towels
- TIME TO DO IT!

I started to "study" all this over a year ago and got hooked. I never knew washing the car could be so scientific and interesting !
Good luck with it!
