Keith - amazing work. What an amount of research and hours of hard work you must have put into this!
Does the wet sanding lessen the impact of scratches by removing a lot of clear coat, or does it actually fill the scratch with some of the paint that is removed by the sanding??

To be honest i have no idea how much clearcoat i've removed without the paint thickness guage, but for the car is going for sale and with previous experience of wet sanding the headlight, i thought i would still give it a go. (But loads of reading and research before i go ahead of cos
)And you're right, i did touch the defects up few days before i wet sand it (eg stone chips,scratches), and then sand it flat the excessive paint before the polishing process, it took me a while but the result is well worth it
As i mentioned before, i will be going to the rotary routine as our BMW paint is rock hard
, some areas need 3 to 4 passes Menz 3.02 mixed with power gloss, and still can't get it perfect, you will need a lot of patients to remove the wet sanded area if you're using DA polisher.

I'm also working on stone chips on my Jet black E60. I was not going to attempt the wet sanding until I saw your post, now I'm not so sure.
The BMW paint chip repair kit comes with clear coat, I'm not sure when I would apply it. I would think it would be after the paint polishing to remove the sanding marks. Would I need to sand again after the clear coat is applied?
