I'm not sure how it is on the diesel, but for my 530i, you disconnect the sensor from the air intake tube and then from there you just spray the entire sensor with MAF cleaner. They sell MAF cleaners at any basic chain auto parts store, at least here in the states. The cleaner is specifically called "MAF Cleaner". I'm not sure if you're taking about trying to dissassemble the entire plastic sensor or if you just can't get it off the car?
This is the thread I read before doing mine:

Did you try a search on the forum? There's a ton of posts about the MAF cleaning and some pertaining to the diesel engine I believe.

so are you saying i wouldnt have to take out the sensor itself? just try to clean it through the housing?
I've had a good look at the MAF and I could not see how to remove the sensor part from the housing.
I think spraying cleaner in is the best you could do.
It will become obvious when you get the MAF off the enigne.

You can't take out just the sensor. You will need to take out the entire MAF housing.
I recently did just that on my 2004 525D. The bottom torx screw is hard to undo but I can be done with some patience.
After spraying mine with brake cleaner I did not notice any improvement.
?? Why do you want to clean yours??

Changed the MAF yesterday, like all mechanical work its esay if you have all the right tools.
Luckily for once I did have the all the tools, took about an hour to get the MAF off and half that time to put everything
back together.
Been out today and the problem I have, hesitation after changing gear was still there
back to the drawing board.

I have read about the need for the MAF learnt values to be reset, but I suspect that given enough time the ECU will re-learn to the new MAF.
