I also think they did not want to special order an SMG. They take longer to sell.

Really?? I'm tending to disagree. I've been looking almost daily for the past 3 months on both ebay, autotrader and cars.com for used 545i's as I'm growing impatient waiting for a 550i. Anyway, I'd say for every 50-80 cars for sale I will see ONE SMG. And every one I've seen has been marked higher than the others with comparable miles.

[quote name='GEARS5' date='Apr 13 2005, 10:00 AM']SMG all the way!!? It is not jumpy at all if you drive it like a manual.? I never use the automatic mode, and in manual mode, I never let the computer do the downshifting.? You must either downshift yourself all the way to first, or use neutral like you would in a true manual.? (keep in mind that you may also start in 2nd gear). Basically the only difference between the SMG and the 6-speed manual, is that the car is applying the clutch for you (and blipping the trottle on downshifts).

I never use the auto mode, its worthless.

But now I have a question: when I downshift manually, which I do all the time, , my SMG sometimes is very smooth, sometimes very jaggedy (in particluar from 3rd to 2nd). Also, it makes a VERY audible click, clack noise both on upshift and downshift. The niose is getting louder with time.

I have asked this before here, but since my dealer keeps telling me its perfectly normal I need help in finding out if anybody else has this? I need ammunition to convince the dealer something is wrong....

Agree the auto mode is worthless. Its only use is for when my wife absolutely has to drive my car.

I think of the SMG as auto clutch manual. Everything is smooth in manual.
Upshifting is smooth and fun, downshifting for acceleration is flawless, and when coming to a stop I allow the SMG to smoothly downshift to 1st for me.

When the car was first delivered I would perform all downshifts but soon realized that it wasnt necessary when braking to a stop. Also it occasionally occurred that the computer and I shifted at the same time resulting in a lower gear than intended. The computer downshifts for a gear dependent minimum speed not for moderate or hard acceleration. When driving you will always downshift before the computer but when braking to a stop allow the computer to downshift and avoid confusion.

Once you get used to the SMG it is the perfect blend of control and comfort and it is a lot of fun.

An avatar is the little picture where the X is right now under your name.

Take the SMG!!! Funk the Dealer, don't let them sucker you in!

The file size was way too large. I fixed it. Thanks for the headsup, it was really bugging the crap out of me.

Question for owners of SMG equipped e60s. When you are driving aggressively on curvy roads and approach a curve and downshift, does the car downshift immediately or does it hesitate a split second? I am concerned about the delayed shift as with my current steptronic. I want a manual for total control, but it is really hard to talk on a cell phone and shift gears, so SMG may be the answer. I have a handsfree kit in my car now, but people have a hard time hearing me with it so I usually pick up.

Is the auto SMG mode totally worthless? Surely it could be used during a phone conversation more effectively than trying to shift gears or would it be jerking around so badly I wouldn't want to use it. Man, BMW almost gives you too many options.

I may pose the question of how effective handsfree with bluetooth is on a bluetooth thread. I assume e60s with bluetooth offer handsfree phone capability.

Thanks for any comments you may have.
