Here is my recent experience, take it for what its worth.....

First, set your emotions aside for a minute about the "new to you" car.

My wife and I recently traded in a 2005 X5 and a 2003 330XI for a 2006 325XI for her. Forget about the deal, why, and all that. Suffice it to say I bought my 550i before selling my 330XI and we were stuck. Had to get out from them, and she wanted a "new to her" car, she's always driven an SUV of some type.

Anyway, they gave us X for the X5 and Y for the 330XI. They now have them both for sale on their lot (this is a BMW dealer): X5 at X + $7,000 and the 330XI for Y + $6,500.

What a joke. You know that they lowball the value when you are trading in or ending a lease and they highball ya when you are trying to purchase a used vehicle.

I can almost guarantee you that they only have 23 - 25,000 in this car and they are asking $34.9k. Bullshit. They have to make money, yes, but not that much. Offer them $24K and see what they say. In any event I wouldn't pay more than $27k for it.

just my 2 cents.
If you are ok with getting another 1000 cut out of the sale do it.
There will always be someone who got a "better price". KBB used car vehicle price does not include the warranty you are getting. You can always negotiate. The worst they can do is say no. Tell them if they are able to come off the price of theirs 500 dollars more and give you 500 more for your trade you will sign the dotted line. Tell them that you think you can get more on your trade if you sell it, which is true. Where I live there is a 5 % sales tax on a new or used car (purchased through a dealer) . They do however, take your trade in off the bttm line which saves you money on taxes. Get what you want. Pick a price that you are ok with. This is the end of the year and end of the month. I am sure the salesperson would rather make "X" on your sale as opposed to no sale. Was the dealership swarming with buyers? I went with a friend last month to get a new MB SUV for his wife. We were there for 2 hours. Not another buyer or potential buyer came in that entire time.........

I wouldn't pay more than $30K FOR ANY 07 530I. you can get a cpo 550I for $34k. The dealers are holding up the prices because of the BMWFS incentives. If you look at a non cpo loaded 07 550i on auto trader, they can't even sell them for $28k

BMW is no longer replacing the heads for the N52 lifter clicking. They have new exhaust lifters and the solution is only to replace the exhaust lifters. The SIB used to say "bleeding" the lifters and if that didn't work after three tries, then to replace a lot of top end engine stuff. That bulletin has been updated in September 2009. There is *no* bleeding procedure and only lifter replacement. See SI B 11 09 07.

TWH I saw this too and the dealer did replace the exhaust lifters.

Mine also got replaced under the new bulletin. I had the "bleeding" procedure in previous service visits and, honestly, I was never very thrilled about the previous replacement of all the other parts. Too much fooling around with an otherwise fine engine. My car had 44K miles when this bulletin got updated and they replaced the lifters. Replacing the exhaust lifters is also easy in this car. The job would cost about $800 if not done under warranty. It makes perfect sense that a new lifter design can solve the issue.

Are you mad at the dealer for doing their job (buying and selling cars), or just upset because you didn't negotiate better? Plus, you know they aren't going to get their ask for prices.

Well the dealer "looked over" the 01 530 and came back with $3k.

KBB put the excellent trade in value at $4775, good at $4200, and fair at $3225.

In all honesty the car is between good and fair. With 197k miles, it has some wear.

I would think $3700 is fair. They will not put this car on the lot, it will go wholesale.

Shifting gears, we went over all our maintenance/repair paperwork on the 01. OUCH!

Since the original warranty ran out on the car (5 years 7 months ago), we have spent $13,600 in maintenance and repairs on the vehicle at the dealer. (we do not have many options with independent dealers).

Needless to say, we were shocked once we looked at the big picture. I know these vehicles are expensive to maintain, I get that, but this seems a little ridiculous once you step back.

What has been your experience?

Does this seem reasonable?

Imagine what a car payment would be over 5 yrs and 7 mos.
You were able to pay for the repairs. You got pretty much twice the life of most American made vehicles , and yes it hurts me to say that.
Obviously, you like BMWs. Don't second guess your self. Yes there are cars out there that have better reliability. But, what else drives like a BMW? Do you think lexus, acura, or infiniti is more suitable for you and your needs?

That is just it. The first 3 years of the 5 I mentioned we were still paying a note on the vehicle. This was a CPO, so within the first year, we hit the 50K mile threshold.

I agree with you, what else drives like a BMW? We keep going back to that.

Actually what we are hoping to do is pay the vehicle off in three years which we will have hit 100K miles by that time. Then just watch the maintenance/repair costs more closely. If they start to get out of hand, then trade the vehicle.

Would not it cost less to lease a new 530 every 3 years? Lets say $650 per month fixed expense, no repairs, no maintenance, nothing!
