So it looks like SMG will be available on the 530i's post September. I was planning on getting the Step + SP. But for a mere $250 more, I can get the SMG. One dealer warned me off of it saying it was extremely trouble prone and that BMWNA just bought back 2 SMG E60s. From what I read here, everyone loves them up.

Am I right in thinking the SMG is a definite upgrade from Step in both the fun and resale department? What about reliability?

I suggest you drive a SMG before buying one. If you're planning on driving it primarily in auto mode, be aware that the shifts are not anywhere near as smooth as the step--I would describe them as jerky. Just my opinion--many on this board love their SMGs--as I said, drive one yourself to decide.

I think resale would be more favorably affected by a step since the dealers know there's a much higher demand for them so they'd be able to more quickly sell the car.

You owe it to yourself to read the SMG FAQ and the threads that it links to:

If you're thinking of a step vs. SMG, the answer is usually step...but then again, SMG is awesome!
