hmm this is an age old question, I just look at it as the expense of owning an expensive vehicle. If bmw's are well taken care of they do well, so unlike toyotas you can't just keep driving it without babying it a bit.
Sorry for asking this question before searching
Though thanks for all the replies, they're very helpful. It seems that the views contrast a little but the general consensus is that an expensive car requires expensive maintenance...
This though raises another question, if I do buy one under warranty, how long does the original warranty last and how does the extended warranty work/cost?
Once again, sorry for not searching but since the crime has already been committed, I figure I should get all my questions over with and make this the first and last offensive thread.

Do a search here and elsewhere for warranty problems.
First, see if your proposed car is eligible for an extgended warr. There are a small # of cars that no third party will warranty. BTW, BMWs come with a 48 mo/50,000 mile warr.
Next, they need to know the miles on your car.
How many months out there that you desire warranty on.
Is your car still under warranty?
Two general types of warranties. Inclusive and Exclusionary. In my mind, the former are a total waste of money. Do you want ) deduct? Or what deduct?
Again, as others have said, do some searches.

German cars generally are not as reliable as Japanese cars. I would not own a BMW out of warranty.

In all fairness, a BMW does require service and the occasional repair (so never own one WITHOUT a warranty), but by the same token, it is not a Ford!!

Likewise, a Ferrari isn't as care or maintenance free as an NSX and costs 3x more, but which would you rather drive?

it is pretty sad........mine only has 43k miles on it, and so far the sunroof seal has been replaced, vacuum pump, and the dealer has a brake booster on order, and will get replaced next week. At this rate, I can see this getting worse the older the car gets. My last car was a Maxima, and the only thing that got replaced in the 13 years that I owned it(other than normal wear and tear parts), was the starter. Not too shabby considering it had 180k miles on it when i got rid of it.
