The reliability of a bimmer.
Looking to buy a 5 series anywhere between 2004 and 2008, but I've heard a lot of horror stories about the expense of having such a thing off warranty...
Do any of you guys have a 5er that has been over its warranty for a while? Have you had many issues? How about while you still had a warranty, did you have a lot of issues then? How many miles/km before you started seeing problems (if any)?
Thanks in advance for any help, I've been reading the forums for a little while now and I've found it very helpful and entertaining.

in my experience its better to stay away from the first 2 model years (04 & 05)
because the engineers are still trying to get the kinks out which you don't see
until the cars have a few thousand miles. not to say that there aren't some real good
cars in those 2 years but thats what my mechanic told me which is why i bought an 06.

German cars generally are not as reliable as Japanese cars. I would not own a BMW out of warranty.

I loved my 550, I really did - but it was, by a massive margin, the least reliable car I have ever owned. And I've owned some terrible cars in my time...
Let's face it, we don't buy these cars because we think all we'll have to do is change the oil and the tires.
I sold my e39 with 247,000 miles on it, and it is still going strong. The new owner is hooked.
Over that time, I only had the factory warranty to 50,000, and a great indi mechanic.
I think I put into it, a radiator (160k), a couple of water pumps (120k), a reman'ed drive shaft (200k), and new suspension components (120k). That's in addition to the regular things.
If you do preventative maintenance, it will cost you much less over the long run. Don't wait until you're stuck on the side of the road with a blown radiator and wondering if you did head damage. (I know this)
Don't worry. If you take care of the car, it will take care of you.
