currently I have 2 years international warranty ... and they upgrade the CIP software free of charge. But after the warranty is finished "expired" . do BMW dealer charge for upgrading the CIP software? and do we have to give them a reason for asking the upgrade ? or we have to do it whether there is a problem with the car or not... will other service centers other than BMW dealers be able to do the software upgrade? and change the oil & reset it in iDrive menu ?

For the upgarde- normally you have to pay if your waranty is over

they only update if there is a reason, so make up a nice story, I will get sometimes 20 as I have window fault message, battery... make a search and you can get some more to gather as much as they will be so tired of listening...

if there is a fault in general of the BMW than BMW must do it free of charge.

I disagree with you ats77...I recently had an active steering fault and the dealership wanted to charge me to upgrade my software. Never had a problem before but now that I am over 50K miles, they want to charge me, even with the Original extended warranty and maintenance to 100K. They explained it saying if no part is necessary to replace, software upgrade are not covered. BS

SUBJECT
Active Front Steering, Fault Code 6141

MODEL
E60 (5 Series) and E63/E64 (6 Series) equipped with Option Code SA217 Active Front Steering (AFS) and produced up to 8/04.

SITUATION
Customer complains of illuminated AFS warning lamp when driving the vehicle. AFS control module stores fault code 6141 "Engine Dynamics Monitoring".

CAUSE

Leaks in the steering system (pump, lines, etc.).

Internal steering gear resistance.

CORRECTION
In case of a customer complaint, check for any steering system leakages and replace the steering gear only if it is necessary. Program and code the vehicle only if the steering gear has to be replaced.

PROCEDURE

If there is no hydraulic steering assist, check for any system leakages and replace the leaking part as necessary. It is not necessary to replace the steering gear in this case.

If there is a hydraulic steering assist and there is no steering system leakage, replace the steering gear. Then, program and code the vehicle using CIP V19.1 or a more recent version. Refer to B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization and Programming), Procedure B.

SUBJECT
Active Front Steering Noise, Fault Code 613E

MODEL
E60 (5 Series) and E63/E64 (6 Series) equipped with Option Code SA217 Active Front Steering (AFS) and produced up to 6/05.

SITUATION
A clicking or ratcheting noise can be heard from the engine compartment when unlocking the vehicle or switching the ignition on. The AFS control module stores fault code 613E "Mechanical Lock Malfunction". The AFS warning light may illuminate in the instrument cluster after the engine is started.

CAUSE
Erroneous AFS self check test parameters. The software has been optimized in 6/05.

CORRECTION
In case of a customer complaint, perform the following correction:

A. Vehicles produced before 9/03: Replace AFS control module and the steering gear. Program control modules and code the vehicle with CIP 19.1 or later.

B. Vehicles produced from 9/03: Program control modules and code the vehicle with CIP 19.1 or later.

PROCEDURE
A. Vehicles produced before 9/03:

Replace the AFS Control Module, see Repair Instructions RA 32 43 010.

Replace the steering gear, see Repair Instructions RA 32 13 060.
