When I was in the US, I was well aware of how you can buy, for example, a 2005 model from around September 2004.

But in Hong Kong, this doesn't happen. They don't talk about 'model year', the only talk about 'manufacture year'.

If the car is manufactured in Dec 2004, it's considered a 2004 'model'.
So here comes the confusion.

I ordered a 545 that is scheduled to be built in July 2004. It will arrive HK in September 2004. What are the chances that this car will be the equivalent of a 2005 model in the US?

Also, people are talking about how the '2005 model' can have fixes. Does BMW (or other can manufacturer) only update their production once a year? Can I assume that as new cars are built every month, constant improvements are being applied to the car?

Thanks in advance.

In order to be the equivalent of a US 2005 model it would have to be built in or after Sep. 2004. Since yours is scheduled to be built in July it will be the equivalent of a US 2004 model.

Upgrades and mods are introduced on a rolling basis, major stuff like facelifts, paint options etc are kept till model year changes.

Thanks for your replies.
But here is what is strange. Except for Canada or US, I am not aware of anyone calling a post-September 2004 build car a 2005 model! So is this a North American only thing?

Here in the UK, we tend to go by registration dates, March 1st and Sept 1st so doesn't really have any bearing on model year....that is more for the petrol heads like us forum boys!

USA seems to go exclusively by model year so yes, a sept 2004 built car can be a 2005 model.......wierd!

Thanks Dr. That's the feeling I am getting as well. So 'changes' made in say a 2005 model is really sold as a 2004 model elsewhere.

btw, GREAT choice on color! =)

Colour....yeh, great minds think alike (or as my wife says..fools seldom differ!

Ti G II looks way, way, way better outside of a showroom, so much so that when mine arrived, a 520 stock car in the same colour was moved outside by my dealer as he reckoned he'd sell it much faster in natural daylight!

I think even inside a showroom, the Ti Gr II is really nice. It took me a LONG time to decide between the Silver Gray or the Ti Gr II on catalog. but once i see the real thing, there were hardly any competition! =)
