Nice idea but if my wife puts her rather full handbag on the front passenger seat the seat belt warning starts to chime. So I take it that the airbag would be activated if the seat belt is done up?
I don't think we get the same as the US, I have never read about in the manual or noticed a warning light to tell you the airbag is deactivated.

Mine is a US spec car. The warning light is right next to the sunroof switch.
When my wife sits in the seat it goes off. When my kids are in the seat it stays on as when I am alone. refer to page 84 of your 2004 Manual.
