Anyone notice that 550i's with 6sp or SMG get hit with a $1000 GG tax?? I think I remember that the E39 540i got hit with it, too.? The 545 wasn't subject to a GG tax.

When the E60 first came out in the US there was a gas guzzler tax of $1300 for the 545i with SMG (only SMG, not Manual or Step).....I think I still have a copy of the pricelist with this on it. I don't remember if the SMG was even available to order back then, but the $1300 GG tax was listed. For whatever reason the GG tax was removed after a couple of months and never reappeared until now. I thought I had read that the 550i was supposed to have more power and better fuel economy than the 545i, but maybe that's not the case.

I too am part of "The SMG Clan".
My '04 SMG had no GG Tax.
I turned 30K miles today and NO SMG Issues to date.
My only recommendation is SMG with B&B!

I guess I must be drinking the Kool Aid too since I also belong to the SMG CLAN. Got it, love it, no problems to date...

You'll dig it...

Change it to the 6sp. SMG in non M-cars are not up to snuff, esp. for a great car like the 550i.

Ya if you search my username with Gas Guzzler tax you'll see I asked that same question I was afraid of paying the extra $1000 GG for SMG... if that was the case I would have gotten Automatic... I wonder if they'll really have the GG tax on the 550 or if it was a dud like the 545.

Not necesarely change it. With SMG you have a little bit of sensation of a manual, no clutch, but also have the confort of an automatic. So if you live in a crowded city where traffic is awfull and most of your driving time is done in the city, you may want an automatic, and if u like to play more you would choose the SMG.
I agree that the SMG in the M cars are like "smth else", it's in another league IMO, but that doesn't mean SMG in non M shouldn't get any attention.

You can add me to the SMG cult.....I would definately recommend it after almost 12000 miles on my 545i SMG.......however, read my post in the following link for my idea on how SMG could be made even better and more flexable. >>>>>Click Here<<<<<

And to counter some of the statistics of SMG reliability, I can say that I have had absolutely no issues with mine after 17 months and about 15 thousand miles...

Also, sure the M5 SMG is better but so is it's engine, etc. The SMG in the current E60 is still fantastic and worth every penny...

More stats... After close to 9 months... only a minor problem with SMG while in automatic mode which was fixed with a software update. Yes I'm one of the rare ones who use both auto mode and manual mode. *shrugs* I like to make sure both modes work still
