So my engine warning light and "service engine soon" come on, for the second time since owning the car. Car is running fine and last time it was a simple SW upgrade and problem was fixed. (or so I thought) The engine was also experiencing intermittent rough idle. So I'm figuring one day in service and I would be good to go.

SA calls and tells me that there may be a problem with the VANOS system and they have to disassemble the top half of the engine to further diagnose the problem. Indefinite time frame when the car will be done

It's funny that you started this post JG996, becuase I was going to start one on the same issue. I too had my service engine soon light come on with the increased emissions warning. I noticed the rough idle but the car otherwise drove okay. My dealer had it in for about a day and a half 10 days ago, and supposedly found nothing wrong, so software update was done that "fixed" the problem.

So I'm driving to work yesterday and the dang light pops on again with the same emissions message! I noticed the rough idle 2 days ago but not when the light came on yesterday. I get to take mine in next week and I guess they'll tell me the same thing :'( keep posting your progress, because now I have something to take to my dealer!

My car had this problem a few weeks ago. I did not have the associated rough idle that some people are feeling though. My dealer called BMWNA who stated that this problem is becoming more frequent and wanted to know the details (my dealer called me while on phone with BMWNA.) They were unable to diagnosis problem. BMWNA told them to clear fault memory and submit puma case.

After 3 days in service, the problem has been diagnosed. SA says the levers? that connect the camshaft to the valves need to be replaced. 4-5 days to get the parts and another 2-3 days to do the install. So I have at least another week until she gets to come home...

The strange thing is other than the occasional rough idle, the car ran great. I guess its better to have found the problem earlier than later.
