They must be using a 1200 baud serial connection to let it take that long.
No kidding, the safest way to update any computer is through a serial connection.
It is slow but reliable.
Plus the fact that it is probably a sequential update that does not simply erase the old program but instead only rewrites part of the rom-software makes the update last longer.
Try updating the firmware on an old Ipaq pocket pc through the serial connector it came with. It will take a day or so.
Our idrive is windows CE based to if i'm not mistaken.

They can do it in 4 hours, but usually it takes them at least a day. They run into problems all the time when they upload the software, so they have to start over and over again and again. Also they sometimes have to program some things manually. But it shouldn't take them more than one day!

I thought the lenght of time they needed your car depended on how many of the services guys wanted to drive it around. If the weather is nice the download usually takes a few extra days.
Mine took 6 hours one time, got the car back the same day. Another time it took 8 hours and they let it load overnight, and I picked it up in the morning. The bluetooth update took 1 hour.

Yep CE based and probably stored on EEPROM - erased and rewritten one byte at a time over a serial connection
The year is 2005, the car costs $68,000, and THAT is the best they can do?
What a joke.
