Palmo,

Similar dealings as yours with my local stealer. In my case the Service Dept said that the fuel filter wouldnt require replacement as the car was new, even tho' the the info from the key said it should be. I didnt take this up. My car, was a March 07 build and now has 21K.

The prices I paid were

Oil 8x13.99 = ?118.92 ex VAT
Environmental Disposal = ?12.50 ex VAT
Filter B11.42.7.788.460 = ?14.68

My total bill for a standard scope oil service was ?235.76 including VAT.

It would seem that menu pricing, is a bit of a misnomer (ie equality in pricing between dealers) . I think in future I ask to have my oil disposed in Manchester as its cheaper than Solihull!

Guys,

I do agree with the having to phone around the local (and not-so-local) dealers for the best quotes. I am "fortunate" to live in the middle of nowhere in the middle of England, so I have a few dealers within the same radius. It does really pay to shop around, at each service too, as the cheapest last time isn't necessarily the cheapest this time round. There was a survey some years ago (What Car Magazine, I think) and Grassick's of Perth were the cheapest in the UK. It is a bit of a way to go for most people, but I went through Perth on my commute (yes, I had a long drive to get to work - I fly now ). They worked out at a tenner cheaper than my lowest "local" price. Good enough for me!!

"Environmental charge" ; Have a chat with your local back-street-garage. A lot of these guys run waste oil heaters for the heating on the premises (I wonder if BMW garages do too ) and are glad for the extra couple of gallons given to them for the winter!!

Intake Silencer; I could be wrong, but I think it is what the old-fashioned amongst us would call an Air Filter!!

For comparison I just had the first oil service on my 335d at 20K miles, and it was ?195 incl VAT. This was at Elms in Bedford, the dealer who supplied the car.

For those interested, the breakdown was ?97.13 for oil, ?14.68 filter, ?46.25 labour and ?8.51 environmental charge, total ?166.57 before VAT.

comments - these relate to my 520d

USA / UK servicing - swings and roundabouts. In the UK we get a 100k warranty over 3 years servicing not included, USA gets ? years at 50k with servicing included. Id prefer the 100k warranty position.

pre-paid servicing. told my dealer id be doing 30k a year - was it worth taking the 60k 5 year package - he said no.

service costs.

at present, ive got 36k on the clock in 14 months.

first oil service at 21k miles was ?150.

Next monday, it goes in for the 'inspection service' at ?105+vat

In 6k miles, it will need an oil service. this im told will be ?140. I suspect that includes vat at its similar to the 21k service.

Asked at last service the cost of brake pads, was told to expect ?120 (+vat likely) for rears.

Most of the world doesnt change their brake fluid every 2 years. Consider using the info on this site that tells you how to use idrive hidden menus to reset service counters - you can tell it to consider the brake fluid change done. your risk.

Haven't bit the bullet yet on ordering a 520d yet, but after trawling round several dealers and asking about the 5 yr/60000mile service pack the general consensus i got was as long as i do 250000+ a year it would probably pay for itself,so obviously i may have to take this with a pinch of salt.
On average how much over 3 years do most people spend on routine servicing on an E60 .

think you mean 25k not 250k

For me, i dont think it would be value. At 36k miles and 15 months, ive spent only ?150 on servicing. I will hit 60k in 2 years. By then (assuming i took 5 years 60k, without pads and the like) I would have to use ?600 odd worth of value. My 37k 'inspection service' at 37k miles is ?120 ish. That would put me in credit by ?330.

Whats the betting that any major service costs would come up at say 62k miles, outside the warranty. Clever and devious things, these computers.

can confirm that my car (520d) had 'inspection service' today and it cost ?125. It needs one in a further 37k miles, and oil in next 5k miles.

For me, looking like services every 37k miles, (?125) and oil every 21k (?140). Thats at 30k a year open road driving mainly.

She then announces it also needs a Fuel Filter, Intake Silencer and Microfilters.

QUESTIONS
1. What are other peoples experiences at the first service - were these items replaced (Fuel Filter, Intake Silencer and Microfilter)?
2. What exactly is an 'Intake Silencer'?
3. What is the average price (in the UK) for the first oil service that people are paying.
On my 35,000KM / 21,700 Mile (first) service on my LCI 520D M Sport Auto, the iDrive reported Oil Change only.
Upon arriving at the dealership, the SA put the key fob into the reader and told me I also needed microfilter, fuel filter and intake silencer! So same as what you were told.

When queried, I was told that all those filters were unusual for a car of that mileage, but that was what Condition Based Servicing said, so that was what would be done. Incidentally, when I asked what the Intake Silencer was, I was told it was something to do with the Exhaust!!!

So, I let them go ahead (I suspected the air filter was clogged as MPG had dropped off) as the car is privately owned and I don't want to jeopardise my warranty.

The whole bill came to ?546 or ?431.

I know, I drive a BMW - I should expect this. But what a twat I feel like for not buying the Service Inclusive! It only cost ?1,200, and at this rate it would have paid for itself in less than a year.......
