When I asked my first dealer to stamp my service book after the first service, he said we don't do that anymore as everything's on the computer. Now that I need a brake fluid change and am having it done at a different dealer, I'm wondering again if people are getting their books stamped.

I ask as I have driven BMW and Mercedes-Benz for decades and always took pride that I had the cars serviced by the book - with a fully stamped book as proof

Have times changed?

It should still be done!
When selling the car a probable buyer has the book and can afterwards ask the dealer if he wants.
For the BMW service guys, they don't need it anymore, that's correct. But it's better for YOU if you have it!

Make them stamp it. It's the only record you have, and it's the one any smart buyer will look at first when they look over your car. I, as a buyer of CPO cars, have walked away from examples purely over the lack of stamps in the service books, and I am sure others would do the same, especially when it comes to cars like ours.

Just keep the service record they give you after you're done paying. Has much more detail than stamping the OM

Iceman's right, they should stamp it -- especially if you request it. Sure, the car's service history can be pulled up by any servicing dealer but having the book stamped is a good backup and can be helpful if there is any computer "discrepancies"...

GET THE STAMP!!

Here in the UK, they aren't allowed to use the BMW roundel any more - something to do with copyright and the fact that the service isn't done by BMW, it's done by a dealer (i.e. BMW have no quality control over it!!).

You are also relying on someone keying in all the relevant information correctly - something that doesn't always happen.

The Computer based records are a good idea, but not as good (from a selling point of view) as a fully stamped up book.

I will never look at the service books cos they can be fakes, in HK you can pay a guy $10us to get it stamped outside of BMW and no 1 will ever know if it is real or fake so the book in HK is a wast of time, best thing is got to BMW and ask for a servies history in there computer they will have it.
If I buy 2nd hand cars I would get a local shop and pay for a checkup on the car, eg crash, engine, etc....

but get it stamped anyway.
