Just remember....? if you live anywhere but the USA, you get your ass handed to you.

I couldn't believe how expensive some of the cars are in European countries.? Way to go, Socialism....?

Here in the USA, everyone has a BMW.? In a lot of European countries, you got to be able to afford the equivalent of a Ferrari in the USA.? ?

Speaking of domestic policy, unless those in charge of the US do a one-eighty, it's hard to see this trending differently anytime soon. Expect those ass-handing prices should it continue unabated.

bmwjimt,
Nice spec. You got a bargain ?10,000 off list price. I thought I had a good deal!
400 miles in 7 months? The BMW accountant didn't drive much did he? Mine was 350 miles in 3 months and I thought what was the previous owner doing? How can he not want to drive such a great car

I just checked the Kelly Blue Book value on my car. 2004 545i 6sp with all the options except Nav, PDC, Active Cruise one year old, 15,000 miles. I bought my car ED and paid $61,550 and the Retail Blue Book value is $54,190, a depreciation of $7,360.

That amounts to only a 12% depreciation in the first year - pretty good for a luxury car.

According to Kelly Blue Book, the BMW 5-series has the best resale value of any luxury car => after 2 years, it has a retained value of 68% and after 5 years, the retained value is 48%.

Right. Also, no one is mentioning that the first production year is always the lowest in resale. Even the venerable M5, the best of the E39 illustrates this. Kelly Blue Book, Dealer Trade in on the default options, 40K miles in "good" condition -

2000 - $33,795
2001 - $39,055
2002 - $41,895
2003 - $42,300

The huge price difference between 2000 and 2001 isn't repeated anywhere else in the model year life of the M5 (or other cars I've checked). It's as if the marketplace builds into the valuation the notion that first year cars are buggier. I don't think it's unfair to say that a good portion of the used '04 E60s have troubled histories.

I don't think we have enough E60 model years to trend valuations just yet, but it's entirely possible that '05 and beyond may fare a bit better over time.

Get at least 3 dealers involved. Dont talk about your trade in until you negotiate the purchase price, and forget about MSRP. Work off of the invoice pricing. 2-3% over is fair. $1000 over is good. These dealers will beat each other up all day.
