I expect this forum represents more purchasers than leasers, while the overall E60 ratio (in the U.S.) may be closer to 33% purchased and 67% leased.

This forum consists of all enthusiasts, who tend to purchase their cars. There is a larger population of E60 drivers out there who tend to lease, either through business or whatnot. A lot of them are not enthusiasts. 90% of cars that drive out of BMW of Manhattan are leased.
PS: Mine is leased, took advantage of the crazy 545 lease rates during the '05 spring/summer.
I was planning on buying, but like jet190, I took advantage of the crazy lease deals (0.001 money factor) several months ago - plus I am scared of owning it after warranty given the car's electronics.
While it may be true that enthusiasts prefer to buy, I think the fact that many member's cars have mods also encourages purchase vs. lease. I would guess the residual value of 3 year old rims, exhaust systems etc. would be pretty low if one sold them on eBay after returning the car.

I've bought my (second hand) 530d with my own sterling having taken money in leiu of a company car.
If it were a co car I would have only managed a 3'er, so this is a step up for me.
I've only got a years warranty yet so I just hope that the legendary beemer reliability carries me forward for the next 3 years.
