[quote name='jsal' date='Jul 12 2005, 10:28 AM']The info I had when I ordered my 2004 at the end of the year is as follows:

2005 models will be built up to the end of July.? Manufacturing is shutdown for August for european holiday and model year change-over.

2006 production starts begining of September.

So, if you ordered a 2006, it will be built starting September unless it is an early release - like when they updated the 3.0 to valvetronic.

You can find out exactly the week that your car is going to be built by either contacting your dealer or going onto BMW's owner circle.? You can track the vehicle right through the build, of course updates are about a week slow.

All I see on Owners Circle is a production #, and does not mention a build date. Is it possible to decode the production # into some build date?

thanks

I just called BMWNA and they said my car would be built July 24, so I automatically assumed that my car would not have the stuff like the start\stop button. The customer rep, said my car will get the start\stop button even though its being built in late July because it was an 06. Anyway, that does not seem like a valid reason, as there are already 06 5 series on the lots that do not have the start\stop button.

The European model year starts in September. Quite different to the bizarre US version of model year. I do believe that August is holiday month. They do maintenance, retool for the new model year, etc. In time for a new model when they start back in September.

BTW, being "bummed" obviously has quite a different meaning over there.

Bummed over here means to be unhappy or sad. What does it mean over in Europe?

The order sheet for the 530 says that the start/stop button will be initiated with Sept production....but it is an option (forget the name...comfort access?), not standard. Did you order this? I don't know how they can say you will get something if you didn't order the option.

There are 2 different features: start/stop button; and comfort access. Comfort access relies on start/stop button to work. Start/stop button is standard in all 06 5-series; built in September onwards. Comfort access is the additional ability to open the doors [I believe] and start the transmission w/o taking your keys out of your pocket. This is the listed option. Note, that if you have start/stop button but opt not to buy the comfort access option, then you will still have to play your key in the ignition prior to pushing the start/stop button. (Not terribly more convenient than a simple key system.) Indeed, it seems that the start/stop button exists *solely* to allow the possibility of a comfort access option.
