I agree with you.? SMG's are great works of technology and I guess if this problem happens to me so be it.? I am not to worried.? I have been taken care of so far.

I've been given the run around with my dealer... saying they have no fix for my automatic to manual mode problem and BMW knows about it so just sit and wait... BLAH!

I've decided to give another BMW dealer a try Long Beach BMW... see what they say.

My SA does not understand SMG, NAV, nor PDC -- probably lot of other stuff, too. Obviously BMW training does not go down far enough in the dealerships. The tech they assigned to me is not trained properly either.

I spoke to my SA Friday. He is optomistic and believes the car will be ready next week. By my calculations, Friday is the magic 30 days. I was told, BMW NA has authorized a complete 3 computer swap. 1. SMG control module 2. Transmission control module 3. Computer control module. This last week, a technician has been tracing every wire in the car. Making sure they are plugged in tight and their is no corrosion, condensation or foreign material in the plugs. So far, the tech has not seen anything out of the ordinary. The computers should come in this week, and BMW thinks they can install the tree computers and reprogram the car by Friday. We will have to see.

I can tell you, Irvine BMW is now the largest BMW dealer and service shop in the LA area. I am confident they have the right people working on the car. I just think they cant find the problem.

Irvine service dept isn't close in size to Crevier. That said, size doesn't really mean better service.

Crevier, Sheel and Irvine are owned by the same organization. They use all three dealerships resources when a problem like this arises.

btw, Irvine is now bigger than Crevier. Just last month they finished a major expansion and more than doubled its size. You should see their service bay, it is huge!

I just read a very recent German car magazine and it states that SMG will not be available on regular cars (such as the new 3 series) anymore, only on M cars. I wonder if it has something to do with reliability?

Can you scan in the article? or better yet do you have the online publication of it?

I have the file scanned. But I am not able to add an attachement to my post. The web page sits and spins for a while and then I get an empty page. I can e-mail it to whoever is interested. Basically, Dr.Goetschel claims that SMG will only be used in very high perfromace cars. I assume it didn't sell. Thus might be good or bad for the value of SMG cars....we'll know in a couple of years.

JDN, I received the file and I think it's too big to post. I can't shrink it until later on so I just now emailed you a copy in case drjochen didn't already send you a copy and you're able to shink it faster. One minor problem...it's in German!
