My final candidates were the 530i or the new A6 3.2.? I selected the 530i b/c I felt the car was more dynamic and fun-to-drive. I am also a bit concerned about the 5 series snow performance, but thought it would be worth a try.? I deal with a 70 mile commute & we have b/w 10-14 snow storms in my part of CT.? The streets are generally pretty clear the next day though.?

I will put snows on the std 17" rims.? I doubt the car will be as good as my X5 or my past Audis (better than the X5), but hopefully better than the avg. FWD car w/o snow tires.? Comments from existing owners have been reassuring.? I was surprised though when I told a few co-workers about changing from the X5 to the 530i.? They thought I was crazy to go to RWD car (albeit I think technology has improved from their point of reference).

Ultimately, how much snow and how big of a commute?? Are the road pretty dry & clear b/w storms?? The A6 w/ snow tires is a great combination for bad weather, but won't be as much fun-to-drive. I really like the look of the new A6, but feel the car is still front heavy with less communicative steering.? I think the car does everything well, but doesn't have the overall synergy of the 5 series.? I would also expect some first year gremlins with the Audi.? I really like Audi's , but had my share of issues with the first model year (A6 and S4).? Good luck in what you decide.

Thanks for your honest feedback ... like CT, where I live in Canada is mostly the same, a good dump of snow then clear for weeks ... the price of the A6 loaded in Canada is in the mid 80's compared to the 545 loaded around 95-100 ... my wife has me trying to explain why the 5 is worth the extra 15 ... I don;t mind paying the money if the car is better and the driving in the winter is somewhat equal to the A6 in the deep snow ... I too am concerns about first year quality in the A6 and it does seem a little smaller inside then the 5 ... its seems to me to be coming down to price, I just hope BMW is willing to move enough on the price so that I can justifiy the cost to myself and my wife ...

We had a good amount of snow in the Boston area today and my 530i handled it quite well. Those Dunlop Wintersport M3 tires really work! Had to go up a hill and the car made it just fine. There were several front drive Volvos and Toyotas that couldn't make it up.

Conclusion: I don't need xDrive.

My current car is an Audi A4 Quattro. It is an awsome car. I had it for almost 10 years and went skiing with it a ton. It never got stuck. I never had to put on chains. I am driving up the mountain with the best of them. No issues. My next car was going to be another Audi. I was looking at the A6 4.2. But then Audi had to change the design of the car and make it butt (or should I say NOSE) ugly. That's why I decided on the 545i. And the 545i was just a little bit more sporty and agressive, which we all love, don't we.

Anyway, I would go for all wheel drive anytime again, but have never experienced it in a BMW. Maybe my next E60 will be all wheel drive.

Any idea when the Xi will be available after the show. My dealer says they cannot even order at this point. He thinks April is not likely, but probably by late spring. Has anyone heard differently?

Im not a big fan of 4WD on the E60 but why wont it be available on the more powerful petrol 545i or the diesels? Is it because drivetain cant handle the power?
