With all due respect, contrary to the previous advice, I believe you can avoid the problem by switching off the compressor (snowflake button) several minutes before shutting down the engine (the fan must continue to run). That allows the moisture to be blown off the evaporator coil. Bacteria have difficulty growing in dry environments.

I previously lived in a high humidity state (Wisconsin). This was a problem with almost any brand of auto.
Yes, that works!
But if you have A/C you don't really want to turn the compressor off a couple minutes before arrival, usually...

BMW used the chemicals and their new machine, and it's night and day. It was well worth the visit, my car smells good again. I am goign to try and go with the advice in this forum, so the problem does not arise again...

Thanks

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones -- I always leave my snowflake on (I always use auto mode) and I live in a humid climate (during the summer months) but do not have the odor problem...

Thanks BMW NA for posting more than your standard, canned message! Keep it up!!

Yeah I had this issue too and it sucked. It was so bad and disgusting especially in South Florida where it's always humid. I got rid of the car and there's no problem at all with my new car. Enviornmental issues always sounded like B.S. coming from BMW. Very few cars have it, and GM used to have a problem with it and redesigned their evaportators to prevent it. There is a way to signifiantly reduce the problem, BMW has been using the same evaporators few years and is using the enviornmental excuse as a way out of paying to redesign the unit.

I have actually also this odor in my car. It started to smell the odor a week a go and BMW will check my car on Wednesday.
I had the same smell in my previous car (E39 530) but after they had changed the filter the odor was gone.

Guys, I had had this problem with my car and the Dealer solved the problem with the following.
They cleaned the ac system with a kind of German deodorant for cars (very easy procedure- just 2 minutes-), after that I haven?t had this probleme since that time (16 months ago aprox). They also told me that is a good idea if you use the AC during spring or winter to turn on the heater to maximum for at least 2 minutes every month to keep avoid of this odor causes for bacteries. Dry place = no bacteries.

I hope this can help you

I have also had problems with odour with my air con, especially during the more humid months of the year in summer. I complained to the dealership, they offered to clean and disinfect the air conditioning ducts, but first they suggested to set the Air Recirculation button to OFF (Not Recirc and Not Auto) just fresh air from outside. After a day or two the smell disappeared, and it has never come back..

I previously had it set to Auto.

Give it a try !!
