hey i was just curious to know what disadvantages a 530 xi has over the 530 i. I mean technically xdirve is supposed to be a very good system. I believe it even helps on dry paved roads. Is the only thing the 530 xi got going against it is the fact that it is about 2500 more? DISCUSS!! lol

It's a bit heavier than the 530i and it rides quite a bit higher. If you were thinking you'd get the sport package with the 18" wheels, the 18" rims don't come with the 530xi sport package, requiring you to spend additional money to get them. So it would cost more than the difference you point out to option them equally.

I've owned and enjoyed AWD cars, but I figured I can easily do without a car on the rare occasion when it snows. I'd rather not put the car through all the salt and muck anyway.

Just my opinion, I know the xi is a great car.

Actually its less expensive to get the 18 inch wheels on the xi ($700 sports package and $600 for the 18 inch wheels). Of course you don't get the 530s suspension upgrades. Unless you live in real snow country, I think having X drive is more a matter of personal preference. I've had an X5 for the past 5 years and have really liked having the extra security that AWD gives you.

Ah - thanks for the correction. What is the xi missing suspension-wise? Also, none of the US cars come with Active Steering in 2006 unless optioned by itself.

"sport suspension calibration" and "Active Roll Stabilization" The sport pack for the 530 is $2300, and for the xi its $700 plus $600 for the 18 inch wheels.

I am stationed in Germany and am ordering a 530i. It snows pretty good here in the winter and the roads ice pretty good too. I just sold my AWD Volvo S60 to get this 530i. I will tell you that the AWD made no difference without snow tires. I also had a 1995 Ford Mondeo AWD with snow tires, that was phenomenal in comparison to the Volvo with all-seasons. The Volvo would not allow me to exceed 30mph on snowed roads without skidding and loosing traction. It also did not have traction control. I saw many BMWs passing me on the local roads. They're performance with snow tires was obviously much better than my AWD with all-seasons. Have fun and go with the 530i w/sports package. Then get a set of 16" or 17" wheels and snow tires. Germany is a country that receives alot of snow. Only recently have the luxury German automakers (BMW & Mercedes) begun to integrate AWD in their sedans. Of course, AWD with snow tires would be ideal for the winter, but is it worth the trade in handling, the rest of the time? Probably not in my opinion...................the price difference is about $2200.....another set of wheels and tires....good setup about $1300. Not to mention you will extend the life of the tires since you are trading bi-annually.
