My Ride: Now Driving a Freakin' Prius!
Was...
2004 545i | SMG | White/Black | Sport | NAV | Logic 7 | PDC | Fold-down Seats | Adaptive Headlights | Cold Weather Pkg | Clear-again Bra | Mud Flaps | Bluetooth | Coat Hangar | Aux Input | All Weather Mats | 18"X8.5" BBS RK w/ Michelin Pilot Alpin's (winter) | New steering rack @ 1.2K & 17K miles| Software V.19.1 | B&B Exhaust (vrrrroooooommm!) <---Click.
I just took my winter tires off a few days ago. The Dunlops are noticeably louder than the snow tires. I can't believe how load they are.
I have a set of KDW-2's on order.
I don't think I can get these covered as I have over 22K miles on the car now and no way to prove how long the snows were on, etc.
The fronts have very good tread left. The backs, well, I think the appropriate term is "Baloney-skins" .
I'm going to keep the fronts for when I turn the car in in another 2 years.

I have come to appreciate my Dunlop Run Flats. Partly as a result of reading many negative comments with the Run Flats, and stories of noise developing at 6000 miles, I decided to take mine off and replace them with Goodyear GS-D3's. Unfortunately, I didn't particularly like the Goodyears -- lots of tramlining, a feeling of sliding around a bit on bumpy pavement (of which we have a lot in NY), and a pretty harsh ride too. Several trips to the installer for re-balancing didn't help. To top things off, I hit a pothole and developed a bubble in the sidewall of one of the fronts so, rather than replace it, I had the Run Flats put back on this week and -- much better! The ride is great. Firm, but not harsh, and very secure feeling.
I only have about 3400 miles on the Dunlops but I'm hoping that Olivin530i's post about 03 tires being the problematic ones, and 04 tires being OK, is correct. My DOT code shows 13-04 and 15-04 for the fronts and rears, respectively. (BTW - that code does refer to the week and year of the tire's manufacture -->
http://www.dunloptire.com/care/sidewall.html
Anyway, here's a big thumbs up for the Run Flats.
I have three GS-D3's with 500 miles on them for sale, if anyone's interested two 275/35/18 rears and one 245/40/18) front.

I've got about 3,500 miles on my original tires, and no complaints.

vern, maybe not so much the build date of the ride but more on the date of manufacture of the Dunlop Run-Flat Tire.
Attachment 7450
Look for the DOT nnnn nnnn WWYY on the sidewall, if YY is 04 or more, then you may have the re-designed Dunlop that is supposed to be quieter.

Excellent work Olivin530i.
The tires on my 2005 545 (Nov. '04 build) are getting noisy with just 5K miles. I would expect them to be the re-designed version, but I'll check the tire mfg. date and see what it says.
By the way, vern, its "peace of mind" (or "piece of ass")

Thanks for the compliment TXPeaarl
My Dunlop RFTs replacement tires (Yr04) seemed quieter than the replaced Yr03 now. I suppose it is coz they are relatively new. I am however not convinced that they will stay the same six to eight thousand miles down the road.
Prove me wrong Dunlop
