Food for thought...
These are data reported by Motor Trend mag in the US. Not exactly the best source but something to keep us thinking:
2007 Audi RS4
0-60mph = 4.5sec
1/4 mile = 13.0sec @ 102.1mph
Passing 45-65mph = 2.1sec
Braking 60-0mph = 112ft
600-ft slalom = 67.5mph avg
(August '06 issue)
2006 BMW M5
0-60mph = 4.5sec
1/4 mile = 12.9sec @ 114.9mph
Passing 45-65mph = 1.8sec
Braking 60-0mph = 114ft
600-ft slalom = 67.7mph avg
(March '06 issue)
I think it's fair to say that these two cars are equally matched in the categories above. Driver skill can turn the favor one way or the other.
What are the chances that BMW will produce an M3 that will eclipse their very own M5 in performance? It's like shooting themselves in the foot.
I understand these are in two different classes for two different target groups. I can speak only for myself when I say I wouldn't want to drop >90,000USD on an M5 only to be out-performed by its little brother.
We all know BMW is quite capable of producing the next M3 to perform better than the M5 but I just feel that they will most certainly "stage" it so that it doesn't. It's all part of marketing.
I can't recall, but what was the last generation like (e39 M5 vs. e46 M3)? Did the M3 equal the M5 in the categories described above or perhaps even surpass it?
Bottom line is, I wouldn't be so quick to praise the upcoming M3 when we still don't know enough about it yet.

S5? My friend, if for real it will be smth like that then i suspect the 335i M packed should have smth to say. No doubt the 335i is a monster but even so if that ain't enough well here comes the new M3. And i have a hunch that will take care of all the S5/RS5/RS4s
Yes, the new M3 when it's out will probably be faster, but I could care less, 340hp is enough for me. It's not like I'm trying to race every car every time I stop at a light. Plus, rarely do I take the car past 100mph, only every once in a while. Even then, I can already get that thrill from my "slow" 530xi.

Wow - I really like the interior of the S5!
More info is just now available on the Audi site - 350bhp and a 6 speed manual (it did not mention DSG though).

Yes, the S5 is real, already leaked. See here http://www.leftlanenews.com/2007/02/20/2008-audi-s5/

Already if you watch 5th Gear you can find the episode where the RS4 is put head to head with the E46 M3 Competition Package. Search on youtube for it. You'll see that they were pretty much neck and neck. And that was the old dog m3. With the new one I AM POZITIVE they will outrun the rs4. Otherwise bmw will brake my heart.
Compare the rs4 with the m5 is again a nono. Not necesarely because of the apples vs oranges argument but because i've seen with my own eyes what the M5 can do to it. Unless the driver launches it perfectly, which btw i hope you know it's quite hard with all awd cars with that much power, then it's bye bye rs4. If he launches it good than to 100km/h is tight but after that m5 walks away. So in conclusion i expect also the new M3 to outclass the M5 at some categories but for sure not on the 1/4. That's the way it works boys and that's the way the RS4 will get his ass handed along with it's kinky quattro system. Sheer driving pleasure.
