(official press release last 1/2 of this article in this link...)

"In practical testing, the new adaptive high-beam assistant was shown to drastically increase motorists' vision while driving in the dark. With oncoming traffic, pedestrian dummies positioned at the edge of the road were spotted at a distance of around 260 meters – roughly 150 meters earlier than with conventional dipped beam lighting. Because its fully automatic, drivers' safety again improves, as it's no longer necessary to operate the lever on the steering column, thus allowing motorists to fully concentrate on the road.

As for how the new adaptive lighting system works, it's based on a camera positioned on the inside of the front windscreen that constantly monitors the traffic situation in front of the vehicle and determines other vehicles' distance (if other vehicles are present). This distance is then communicated every 40 milliseconds to the range of bi-xenon headlamps, which vary their lighting and continually adapt to the data they're fed. The system is operated by switching the rotary light switch to the "Auto" position and the multifunction control lever on the steering column to high beam, after which the adaptive high beam technology becomes fully automatic at speeds above 55 km/h (34 mph).

And that, in a nutshell, is the Mercedes' adaptive high-beam assistant. It will make its debut starting in spring 2009, but in the meantime, you can check out the full details of the new technology in the official press release below. (click the link above to see the official press release)

Enjoy ladies and gentlemen...."

they're not quite the same thing, the BMW system is more of a automated high beam/low beam whereas this one dynamically adjusts the physical range (and the dipping point) of the headlights based on the specific location of oncoming traffic. We can be pretty sure BMW will have something similar (and possibly better) soon!
