My dad has a merc sl 500. It is honestly not a good car. It runs and works ok. The prob is it isn't holding up. It has is share or glitches and bad sensors as BMW. But little things break all the time. The leather is worn out at 23000miles. Switches on the dash break. He says hell never get another.

Just one question, Do we really need 7 gears???

That's what people say about 6, and I drove a friend's 5-speed VW this weekend and it felt oddly empty. 5 and that's it??!!

I'm thinking I need 8.

I think the CLS is an attempt at Merc to test the waters with a "radical" design by their standards. IMHO, they didn't want to take the chances that BMW did with the 5 and 7, but now they are seeing people take to these cars, and they are wondering if they need to make some "bangle-like" designs. It is a good test for them really. As far as prices go, you can't put it exactly where the E-Class is, and the only place you can really fit it, the only place where Merc has some range is between the S and the E. They have remained conservative with the C, the E, and even the S redesign coming up looks like an upgraded existing S, rather than a completely new design.

We'll see if it flops or not, but I'm sticking with BMW. The only car Merc makes that I like is the CL series, and even then it is missing some of the soul of the BMWs. But, no hateration on my side. Without competition, we are in trouble, so I wish them well, and I stick with BMW.

Honestly, I think that the CLS looks like the Oldsmobile Alero meets Ford Taurus. What's up with the headlights? They look OK for the CLS, but BMW gets villified for the same style? There are certain angles from which the CLS looks really good. They are almost always low and either from the rear or the front. From the side and at eye level, the CLS looks god-awful to me.

I'm sure that the CLS55 AMG will be plenty fast in a straight line, but what about that hairpin at the end of the 1/4 mile straight?

Have been looking at the cls before buying the E61. liked the CLS but no diesel available yet.
The mrs liked the cls more than the bmw e60, so we compromised on the E61.
No regrets yet!
