Hi all,

Was extremely surprised by data provided by EVO magazine on the track test times achieved by the Subaru WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Evo 9. Both cars came in significantly better than the M5 and M6. They also beat a couple of Porsches. Thought that an M5 and M6 had an edge in terms of power and handling ability and would therefore deliver superior track times. But, I guess I was wrong. Maybe the 4WD/AWD combination provides better handling characteristics than a RWD vehicle with a 50-50 front-rear weight distribution. I used to think that a RWD vehicle with a 50-50 front-rear weight distribution would at least provide similar handling capabilities to a 4WD/AWD vehicle. Hmmm, looks like power is really nothing without control. The next time I shop for a vehicle, I'll be looking seriously at 4WD/AWD transmissions. Any thoughts on this?

You're comparing 2 'pimped up' high-pressure turbo (read lots of lag) engines with a highly engineered V10 - no comparison! Cripes, the Evo has 4 cylinders and only recently did the Impreza gain 2 cylinders and made almost a proper engine! Whilst the thrashing of the aforementioned pimp-mobiles may give good performance the driving experience is not subtle! YMMV

i have a evo ix and a rx8 and a 350z and all these cars are amazing fun factor but has very poor ease of driving. The RX8 is slightly better but still lacks true comfort. the e60 is a perfect car cause it has best of both worlds. The M5 will surely win in a straight line with both vehicles after 100MPH for sure. but both wrx sti and evo ix are highly engineered rally derived sports saloons and stating them as fake engines blah blah don really do justice. They are comepletely a different breed and speak a different language than the M5 or other e60's.

It's true, the Evo & STi are faster than any Porsche (apart from GT3 & above) & any BMW, but only if they ran on a mickey mouse circuit with short straights & lots of corners. Both are lighter & have more traction out of corners, & have short gear ratios compared to European cars (remember, Japs have official speed limit of 100km/h).
I have been watching those Best Motoring videos for many years, & the Evo reign supreme in circuits such as Tskuba (quite a short lap where cars don't reach 5th gear on the straight). Actually, they 'raced' a M5 on Tsukuba with various Jap cars & European sports cars, & it performed well. If u switch to circuits such as Suzuka or Fuji or Motegi, then the Europeans reign supreme (apart from the NSX Type-R).
Skyline GT-R is now no match against the latest Evos & STis, as factory development effectively stopped during 2001.
U cannot really compare a Evo/STi with M5/6, as they're different cars for different markets. Evo/STi are good for short cross country blasts, as they suffer from stiff ride & noisy engines. M5/6 are more grand touring types, more relaxing but less hectic. Fun in a different way. If u're really into 4wd, then u should get an Audi. Seems that the latest RS4 is quite a good car.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I have a WRX STi but still bow to the almighty M5. However, it's a beast to be recognized. The low end torque is unbelieveable. colejl, I don't know what you mean about the Impreza "recently gaining 2 cylinders." The imprezas (RS, WRX, STI) are all 4 cylinder cars and have been for as long as I know.

Let's have respect where it's due. The Scoob and EVO aren't pimp mobile boulevard cruisers on 20 inch spinners but cars derived from World Rally Championship winners.

Was watching the Top Gear rerun today where Clarkson tests the M5 and then the Stig takes it out on the Top Gear Anglesey track. The M5 came in just BELOW the Evo (VIII or IX can't remember) and just above the STi on the Top Gear board.

Yup, my mistake... Capacity jumped from 2l to 2.5l... But still 4 cylinders...

Different car types for owners with completely different demands.
That cars are lighter, turbo powered, and hungry for consumption.
If BMW supply the M5 with 50-60 lt. petrol /100 km and fit a turbocharger 6 psi on it, then the M5 will do 1245 bhp at least. Will then it be that car for a householder with his kids at the rear seats, travelling speedy safely and quietly long distances?

All that cars are very fast and powerfull, but nothing more positive than this.
All the other characteristics are NEGATIVE on those cars.
