IS-F fake exhaust
#11
This is out of topic question, but I was sad to see it happen, so I will write.
My gf's IS 350 beat my friend's 545i from stop and from 60 mph freeway roll.
I wouldn't say it was a close race, because 545i lost every time, not by far, but I can see that gaps weren't closing, if not increasing.
I wonder how IS-F will do against the new M3 on straight way.

I believe the IS350 will beat a 545i from a dig up to 60mph, but not from a 60mph roll. EBMCS03 has a IS350 as well as a 545i and I went head to head against him in his IS350 on the highway in my previous 545i. I beat him 2/3 times we ran. The one time I lost was b/c I ran out of space. The IS350 has a strong engine up to 80mph and after that it dies whereas the 545i just keeps on pulling.

Well, do the quads in the back of a M5 come from 4 actual pipes or just 2? Do the vents on the sides help cool the engine or just deco? Do the trunk spoilers/lip actually benefit the the aerodynamics of the M5?
Let's be fair here.

I believe vegastrashed answered on of your questions. Here is the answer to another.
Taken from an autospies.com article from 7/06/2004 for the M5.
http://www.autospies.com/news/It-s-officia...Part-five-1793/
The rear diffuser fulfills a central function in underbody air routing. Together with the unobtrusive spoiler integrated into the rear lid and the almost entirely smooth, flat underbody, it accomplishes an improvement in airflow across the underbody, resulting in an excellent drag coefficient and a reduction in lift forces. Customers with particularly sporting ambitions have the option of a rear spoiler that reduces rear axle lift by a half. A new registration plate trim gives the M5 a unique and superior appearance.

Thanks for the enlightenment on the first question. As for the side grilles and trunk lid, it serves more poetry than scientific significance (in terms of quantifiable performance gain). OK, maybe the trunk lid is helpful at around 200 mph.

My Ride: 2005 530i upgraded to 2007 550i 12/20/06
Took delivery of 2008 M5 3/25/08 cf delete K&N filters, the rest stock.
Just an observation about "quad" vs "dual exhaust". What constitutes quad exhaust?
An M5 has only two headers and two seperate exhaust pipes down to the point of the
mufflers in the rear. This is, in my opinion, a dual exhaust system with the outlets seperated in to
four exhaust tips. Both mufflers at the rear are fed by only a single pipe per side. My 1971 MB280SL
has two seperate headers feeding two seperate pipes going to a single muffler with two outlets from the muffler going
to two seperate exhaust tips. Factory states single exhaust system! What would my 550 exhaust be classified as? I know
with the emegence of so many "X" pipe installs that an argument can arise about how single vs dual systems can be
had. The 550's system does conviene down to a single, so be it larger pipe leading to the mufflers suppling two exhaust tips, duals?
So is a M5 really a quad exhust system? Just being curious!

quad = 4 exhaust tips
dual = 2 exhaust tips

so where DO the exhaust gases come out on the IS-F???
does it just get dumped before the bumper???
#20
The exhaust gest dumpted the normal way. The IS-F exhausts are real and fully-functional:
?While previous reports have surfaced showing pre-production placeholders for the upper tips, our test vehicle was full-functional for all four.?
http://www.autospies.com/news/Review-The-C...s-beat-it-22777
Edmunds tested a preproduction model and made a misleading conclusion.
There is no IS-F "fake exhaust" on the real models.
