I was searching edmunds and came across the IS-F test. The stacked exhaust tailpipes are not connected to anything, they are fake. They were ugly in the first place and there fake, what is the point?

Quote from the article:
"There's also something about the gimmicky styling. The most telling trace of disingenuousness can be found in those stacked quad exhaust "resonators," as Lexus describes them. We discovered that not one of the chromed ovals is directly plumbed to the muffler and are instead part of the rear fascia. They're there just for looks."

Here is a pic, with the guys hand behind them, I can't believe they did this, LOL!

"Silly Lexus, fake exhausts are for kids!"

Well, do the quads in the back of a M5 come from 4 actual pipes or just 2? Do the vents on the sides help cool the engine or just deco? Do the trunk spoilers/lip actually benefit the the aerodynamics of the M5?

Let's be fair here.

OEM M5 exhaust has four separate mufflers with a tip each = true quads.

I believe vegastrashed answered one of your questions. Here is the answer to another.
Taken from an autospies.com article from 7/06/2004 for the M5.
http://www.autospies.com/news/It-s-officia...Part-five-1793/

The rear diffuser fulfills a central function in underbody air routing. Together with the unobtrusive spoiler integrated into the rear lid and the almost entirely smooth, flat underbody, it accomplishes an improvement in airflow across the underbody, resulting in an excellent drag coefficient and a reduction in lift forces. Customers with particularly sporting ambitions have the option of a rear spoiler that reduces rear axle lift by a half. A new registration plate trim gives the M5 a unique and superior appearance.
