Which car you say is the 5 series biggest competitor?

The Lexus GS is not a true "competitor" because it does not match up in terms of $$$. They are much cheaper, and therefore not fairly compared.
Lexus may capture some sales from BMW and Mercedes.... but since the price is so much less, you can't call it a fair comparison. (i.e. It's not like Lexus is stealing the full dollar amount from BMW when they sell a GS over a 5 series... they're just getting a fraction of the $$$)

I'm sure that if you asked Mercedes if they consider the new Lexus LS 460 as a serious competior they would say yes even though the price is less. I think BMW would say the same thing for the LS 460 and the 7 series.

I understand what you're saying, but if you go the the BMWUSA web site and look at the 550i link under comparisons, they list the A6 4.2, GS 43, E-550, I-45 and Jag S as the common competitors. All except for the MB are lower in cost (up to $8K lower in MSRP without options). They (or other models in their product line) are all sold as 5 series competitors and these are the cars that the various automotive magazines compare the 5 series.

I agree with several others here in that the MB E Class is the competitor. However, the biggest selling midsize premium sedan in the U.S. market is the Lexus ES (67,000 units YTD 2006 - E60 is #2 at 49,000 YTD).
If I had to pick a midsize premium sedan for me to drive other than an E60, I would likely go with the Audi A6.
