I'm guessing your not into cruiser. You need to ask yourself what you want from a bike. Long cruises or high speed, knee scraping turns. You won't be able to ride those superbikes for more than 30 minutes before you'll need to get off and stretch. Having said that, just wear protective gear when riding. You see idiots out there all the time, both on cruisers and crotch rockets, that wear T-shirts or shorts or even sandals. It may be hot or you may want to look cool, but always wear protective gear. Even better if the gear has armour in it.

I had a 2000 R1 that I totalled about 2 years ago. I was coming down Angels Crest Hwy and going around a turn a bit fast. I dumped the throttle, which lightened the back end and the back slipped out. I low sided and slid right into the wood post for the guard rail at about 50 MPH. I was wearing a one piece leather suit, racing boots, back protector, full face helmet and gloves. I fractured my collarbone, broke a rib and punctured my left lung. I was in the hospital for 3 days and took 2 months to recover.

The point of my story is, when you start riding, you will eventually go down. That's just a fact. Ask anyone who's been riding for some time and they'll tell you. I've been riding for about 5 years and I've been down 3 times. First time I twisted my ankel, second time was the big one and the third time was a slow speed turn with sand on the ground. Just a few scrathes on that one and a bruised ego. Gear up, gear up, gear up. Even with my leather suit, there was a small patch by my left calf that burned completely through. I only slid for about 50' before hitting the guard rail. Be safe, especially if you decide to get a superbike. All the superbikes these days are fairly equal to each other. Unless your Valentino Rossi, you'll won't even come close to their potentials.

Everyone tells themselves that they won't go fast or split traffic or do anything crazy, but once you get on a superbike, they make you want to go fast. The foward lean and growl makes you just want to go. Eventually you'll start getting comfortable on them and next thing you know, you'll be splitting traffic or taking it up over 100 on the freeway late at night. I still think about getting another superbike, but I know myself too well. I want to live. Just be careful and I did mention to gear up.

Im in a 04 gixxer 600 with a bunch of mods. Its light as shit and fun to drive but im leaning towards a 1000. Ive been trying to find opinions about Hayabusa in regards to the weight distribution and how easy it is to ride. My concern is it comming up from me. The new 1000 is a beast

I think the R1 or Suzuki 1000 would be the best if he decides to jump to a 1000cc bike. I hear alot of people suggesting not to go this high if you're a first time rider. What it reallly boils down to is the rider and not the amount of power the bike has. Not to deter him from riding, but a crash is a crash no matter how many CC's the bike has.

You're right, you cannot ride a 600 cc or a 750 cc or a 1000 cc to its full potential on the street. I think its more of a man thing to have a bigger bike....

For me if I can do it all over againm I would have gone straight to a 1000CC. I started with a 500cc (Suzuki) to a 600cc (Suzuki), bought a Fatboy (Harley) then a 954CC. Now my Yamaha R1. Love this bike Wasted my money going from Small to Big.

How was that 954? Had alot of low end compared to the R1? Got any pics of it? Gotta love that 954

I definitely recommend considering something more tame than a liter bike or other small supersport for a first time rider. I started on a Ducati Monster 800 and it was plenty fun. If you want to add more juice, it, along with other "naked" sport-type bikes, is easy to mod. I will not lecture you, it is ultimately your decision.

The only thing I plead, beg, hope, and pray that you do is get full protective gear. If it's hot, get a mesh armored jacket, summer gloves, and airflowing armored pants. Full-face helmet is a must. Regular jeans and t shirts are like riding naked, they'll shred off just as fast as your skin. I was pumping gas the other day and this guy rolls in on his tricked out R1 wearing a full face helmet, jeans, and tennis shoes (boots are a must, as well, preferably laceless). That's right...no shirt! I wanted to walk up to him and slap some sense into him, but, hey, it's his life...

Ride safe, enjoy it, and love it!

Exactly what I've been trying to say, those litre bikes are nice and power is there at any speed and gear.
However you got to remember that it can easely bite you in the ass in a blink of an eye, I've started on v-twin SV650S what a blast to ride that thing and still up to now have that bike but dont ride it on streets anymore. Seen busas getting slaped by those small v-twins badly on twisties, heck those 250cc two stroks are so fast at track that you can see them laping you constantly. Have to agree with everyone who mentioned protective gear is a must, full face helmet gloves boots and leathers or mesh pants and jacket. Seen a lot of idiots ridding in flip flops shirts and chromed bucket on his emty head and one for a passenger ohh and chromed out frame and wheels in other words SQUID or POSER that have no knowlege about how to ride. Then people wonder why insurance is so high for bikes cuz of idiots like that unfortunately.
