IMHO, Audi is still the leader in AWD technology. There have also been numerous comments on the net & press that Audi's "I Drive Clone" is more intuitive and easier to operate than BMW's version. So while I agree with a number of your comments (Guest), I don't think Audi is a far away as you suggest from MB & BMW. I think Audi's biggest issues are improving reliability (similar to BMW), residuals/perceived value and dealer body. All major items in my book.
I didn't help that Audi had a stale product line which has since improved with the new A8 and A6. If the A6 has significant issues in its 1st year, however, Audi will have a hard time closing the gap. I also question Audi's pricing (new A6 and A8), starting to close the gap b/w BMW and MB. The gap still exists, but it has declined. As a result, BMW and MB are better values, particularly when you lease.
I prefer the way the 5 series drives over the A6, but they are both good vehicles. One concentrates more on driving dynamics while the other is more luxury focused.
