I noticed on my navigation screen that sometime I have a phone ICON to the left of the antenna strength ICON and other time I don't see the phone ICON. Any idea why?

Different phone status will alter the display seen under the idrive screen. For example, if I have a missed call or an unread text message, the phone icon changes to a triangle. After clearing those on my phone, the little phone icon returns.

Okay but my phone icon goes away and nothing else shows. The box would be blank, why? or what does it mean?

Does BT show connected and signal strength? If so I wouldn't be concerned about the iconic display. Otherwise your BT connection is failing. You should contact your cellular provider and ensure your phone firmware is updated. Also check the compatible phone list and related information here:

This is not correct (close, but no cigar...)

Normally, there is no phone icon or triangle. When there is a missed call (while the phone was paired) the little phone icon shows up. The only way to clear that icon is to go to the missed calls screen on the car and delete it. The car doesn't know about missed calls that the phone may know about (when the phone wasn't paired.)

The triangle icon indicates that the phone is roaming. Depending on your phone, your carrier and your location, you might see the triangle from time to time. (My Treo used to show a triangle quite often but my BlackBerry never does -- even though both of them were on the same carrier and I was driving around in the same areas...)

Rudy, Thanks for your clarification.

I thought that was one of the possibilities but when I check my phone it doesn't report roaming, especially if I'm in a well established Verizon service area . But, there it is when I have a message waiting or missed call on my cell the phone icon changes to the triangle. For the most part I'm helped aware of the signal strength indicator that provides more useful phone status . And the best of all for me is the voice system's ability to read my phone book without needing to "teach or train" it.

All in all I'm quite impressed (occasionally simultaneously frustrated ) with the current on-board technologies.

Can I have a cigar anyway ? ? ? Pleeeeze

Try clearing all your missed calls using iDrive and see if the triangle ever shows up. As another test, call your phone once (and don't answer it) to create a new missed call and see what symbol shows up.

This has been a topic many times. While the missed call indicator is consistent, the roaming triangle is not. My Verizon phone starts the flashing triangle as I get close to New York City, but not when I am in the middle of nowhere.
