I know that there is a phone in the E60 that is used to make emergency calls and BMW Assist calls when there isn't an outside phone present. Is this phone a GSM phone?

I'm wondering because there's a BT profile - the "SIM Access Profile (SAP)" that could presumably allow the car's system to read the SIM from the driver's paired phone, allowing what would be like virtually putting the SIM from your mobile handset into the car's embedded phone.

Would solve a lot of problems if we could do this... battery life, signal strength, etc...

Don't think it's GSM. I think it uses the Verizon network and I'm pretty sure they're not on GSM. Also, since GSM coverage in the US isn't as large as the other methods, it wouldn't have been too smart for BMW to go with a GSM carrier for the Assist service...

Nod. Well, it was a thought. I suppose this phantom bluetooth module add-in could conceivably have an integrated GSM handset that supports the SAP profile... It would be nice if they were smart enough to do it that way.

Right - or AMPS. I'd imagine the AMPS coverage is going to be what saves you if you're in the middle of nowhere.

Verizon tri-mode phones support:

CDMA - 800MHz
CDMA - 1900MHz
AMPS - 800MHz

Sony Ericsson - CM42 Rugged Module

Dual Band AMPS 800 MHz and CDMA 800/1900 MHz
