I read somewhere (months before I received my car) that the E60 car phone set up (i.e cradle plus cell phone) would automatically detect whether you had a new text message (SMS) and put a message on I-drive to alert you to the fact.

I read in one of the UK reviews after that, that with bluetooth, you could actually read the SMS text on the i-drive screen.

No mention of any of this in my manuals - was this just a fallacy ?

Here in the US, SMS can be displayed on the iDrive screen.

It is even discussed in the US owner's manual .pdf file on page 156 (which is .pdf page 158).

(You can look at the US owner's manual by clicking here.)

Hmm. I'll have to check my manual again. In the UK, the telephone section comes as a separate mini-manual with a nice British Telecom Red Telephone Box on the front ! Don't recall seeing that page at all - maybe my haste at the time to get Blue tooth working....

Never seen SMS as a menu option on i-drive, despite having unread messages on my phone. Will be interesting to see if you receive an SMS with your cell phone on you, then you load it into the cradle and drive off, whether the i-drive shows it as a new SMS or whether it will only show SMS received while you are in the car. If the latter, I'll have to camp out it my car for a bit (I can think of worse things!).

I can read SMS on my idrive screen just as described in the manual. I also have an extra manual for the phone. But in the regular manual for the car it is also described, just like the US version.
What I miss about SMS is an alert tone, a beep, when new messages are received. It is only indicated through a little symbol. Since I have HUD I'm not paying much attention to the idrive screen.
Also it is far too much trouble to write SMS (in the car) with the BMW phone pro.

Thanks Iceman. I wouldn't dream of using i-drive to send an SMS either!

Impressive spec, by the way. Sehr sch?n ausgestattet!

I'm not sure that's something I can even do with the US spec CPT9000.

Keep in mind that in the US, most adults don't even use SMS. It's easier just to call the person, in my opinion.

Dr T,

I have BusNav and bluetooth but there is no SMS functionality on the i-drive. My father has a 730d with the BMW integrated phone and this allows SMS to be displayed. Is the SMS a function that is only available with ProNav in the E60? This would seem very strange as it is only in the last month or so that BMW has finally made bluetooth available with ProNav. I would have gone for ProNav myself but wanted the bluetooth functionality and the two were not compatible when I ordered my car last July.

Thanks DrT.
I just added an portable DVD player what can be used on the 12V cigarette lighter
I couldn't wait any longer for the software update in September
And my specs... well, it would have been easier to say: GOT 'EM ALL !

Interesting differences. Is there any one with Bluetooth in the UK that can access SMS on the i-drive (ie see the text on the screen ?). I have the Siemens S55.
