With all the Bluetooth confusion, and with my Dealer being completly clueless, I contacted BMW NA and actually received a competent answer!
"BMW has just released the availability of Bluetooth for 2004 5 Series vehicles produced during 3/04-8/04. Your vehicle can have the Bluetooth retrofit installed. This new functionality can be added and paired to your Bluetooth telephone by the service team at your authorized BMW center."
Here is the list of approved phones they sent me:
Motorola V600
Nokia 6310i
Siemens S55/S56
Sony Ericsson T616/T610
Sony Ericsson T637
Sony Ericsson T68/T68i
Sony Ericsson T608
