Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for contacting Motorola e-mail support.

Regarding your concern, the software upgrade for the V710 phones will be available in the market later this year. It is not available for current phones.

Thank you for allowing us to be of your assistance.

Best regards,

I have just submitted complaints to the FCC (www.FCC.gov) concerning VZW's false advertising and monopolistic behavior as exhibited through the marketing of a partially technologically disabled handset-- the Moto v710.

I do not expect that I will receive any direct response to these complaints, nor am I looking for any relief or compensation.

My main hope is that through a grass-roots consumer effort (which forces carrier compliance departments to respond to complaints) we can persuade carriers to adopt a common standard for open data exchange (OBEX and OPP) and DUN in the implementation of Bluetooth AND the advertising of any handset as being "Bluetooth enabled."

All interested should fill out this form.

I asked again whether the firmware would work in a BMW and here is the response, which is still good news:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting Motorola E-mail Support.

Regarding your concern, when the OBEX profile is restored, the V710 phone will support Bluetooth capability for pairing-up with the headsets , for using the phone as a modem and transferring data and media files both via Bluetooth and over a cable connection.

Communication between the cars' handsfree system and the V710 will enabled, including the BMW.

I hope this information has been of your help. I really appreciate your patience.

Thank you for allowing us to be of your assistance.

Best regards,

For most people (especially those who had a chance to experience higher level of cell phone functionality that can be seen in Europe, where you can pay for a parking meter or get a soda from a vending machine using your bluetooth enabled phone) this phone is very crippled. If the phone is "bluetooth enabled" you should be able to expect some basic functionality. For example, my local CVS allows you to print prints from your camera and accepts a CD, all flash cards varieties as well as a bluetooth connection as an option to upload the images. It does not work with V710 as the file transfer is not possible. Also a very basic expectation is that you will be able to sync with Outloook via BT. And too be honest most of users expected that they will be able to transfer their ringtones, pictures and MP3 files to the phone - this is what BT was designed to do from the beginning.

At the time of the phone release nowhere on the Verizon web site, in their printed materials or in the Verizon store one could learn that the phone has a limited implementation of BT and is not capable of the basic operations I described above. I agree they did not claim that you can transfer files, but they did not specify that you cannot. Before we all got educated more about BT due to V710's problems, most people did not even know that you can have a BT device that does not transfer files. Few weeks later you could learn this from forums like this one, but this does not absolve Verizon from obligation to fully disclose the limitations of this phone.

This phone is more limited than it could reasonably be expected - and this forum is a proof of it - if the phone worked fine nobody would complain here. How would you feel if you bought a car and found out that the driver's seat does not move and cannot be adjusted? You would obviously complain.

I may well leave Verizon. But because of their phones and what they have done with the V710. My Verizon number currently forwards to my Cinular RAZR because it works with the E60. Regarding the coverage and your comment "they don't even have GSM" you are misinformed about the technology. Verizons CDMA technology is far superior to Cingular's GSM. I have been testing Cingular in Los Angeles for the last 10 days. Yes, the coverage is adequate, but you do have more dropped calls when moving from site to site.

Look at this post to learn how this works
