So, I've gotten to know a bit more about how my Motorola V551 works and how Bluetooth works over the weekend. Maybe this is all old news, but here're my observations.

1. The phone has voice dialing. I can only enter a voice name if the entry is stored on the phone, not on the SIM. That makes the SIM less valuable, unless I can say, bulk download my Outlook address book to it, which I have yet to attempt, for names and numbers only.

2. If I move an entry from the phone to the SIM or vice versa, I lose the voice name - expected - but also lose any pauses or waits in the number - not good. So, numbers need editing after moving.

3. I can't figure out how to send additional digits with iDrive. For instance, dial, then pause and send more digits for voice mail, etc. Pause might work, but I use "wait" so I discretely send the next digits. So, I'm using the 'keypad' in iDrive during the call to send them.

4. The address book does sync wth the car, and pulls over both phone and SIM saved numbers, but does not move over voice dialing info. So, to use voice dialing by name, the person needs to be set up again in iDrive. It's a little odd, to have to put them in twice, once in the phone and once in iDrive, but it's doable if you don't have too many voice dials.

In general, I like the concept. I like the ability to dial numbers by voice, look up numbers in iDrive and click to dial, etc. It's a pretty good solution overall.

For my Bluetooth setup, dating back even to when I had the CPT9000 installed, I never had to record any voice tags on the phone to get voice dialing. I just say "Dial Home" and the speech to text engine goes through my phonebook and finds the "best fit" for what I said. It works like a champ. I have NAV, though, which includes a superset of the phone Voice Control stuff.

Waits and pauses are a PItA for sure, but it's not terribly inconvenient to use the iDrive puck to enter a pin number in the middle of a call. Hopefully a SW revision will cure that and allow us to have pauses in the dial string for the number.

So, you can put a voice name in the book whether the thing is saved to the phone or the SIM? Or, if the voice name's in the phone, the car will recognize it?

Do you have Nav?

Mine rings thru the car. I think it's the little speaker under the dash, but I can't confirm it - haven't received enough calls.

Update - today, people are telling me I sound like I'm in a tunnel when I'm on speaker/bluetooth. Complaining about static, too - maybe it's a bad cell. Anyone have this complaint - not an echo, more like I'm inside a box.
