I just had my dealer activate the bluetooth on my 2004 545i (May 2004 production). No parts were required, just 3 hours(!) of programming.
I purchased a Motorola V710 with Verizon service, and the car and phone communicate just fine. The quality of sound from the person I am talking to is fine. However, the sound quality on the receiving end of a call I place (so I am told) is consistently lousy -- like I am speaking in a cave, plus other distortion.

Anyone have any idea of what the problem might be? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Spend some time with a friend on a land line who can help you out. While in the call adjust volume levels and turn the air vents down. There is a sweet spot somewhere in there. Also resist the urge to shout. It makes a big difference to the other party.

Also the echo is intermittent, I think it depends on signal strength or the individual cell site.

Welcome aboard, WhiteTooth
What I heard that upgrading sw can fix echo sound. I am not sure about v710 but from Razr, you can adjust volume control from the phone(reduce volume by one) to reduce lousy noise.
