there's more to a phone than just texting
Sure there's more to a phone than texting, for me, I never text but I still rely on a keyboard (rather than a numeric keypad) to utilize my phone to it's full potential. It's clearly no longer just a voice communication device...

I like how Apple is killing the competition through low pricing which will force their competitors to lower their prices as well. Paying $500+ for a cellphone is rediculous and consumers can't do anything about it.

If you think $500 is ridiculous, you should see the pricing on the upcoming Nokia N96

Have seen this on a few forums now. Nothing concrete just yet from hofo (howardforums) as well. But a q4 2008/q1 2009 release would make sense. I still am thinking december/january.

Are there any Blackberrys that don't make you feel like you are wallpapering your hall through the letterbox? I don't think I could live with the small screens on the models I've seen so far.

The Samsung Omnia looks like an interesting alternative to my iPhone. It has a proprietory touch screen system on top of Windows Mobile which seems to be getting good reviews. On the minus side the screen is still a bit smaller and it has lower resolution. Did I read somewhere that 3G will only work in Europe\ Asia with this phone?

Surely someone must be able to produce something with a screen which is is up to the standard of the iPhone? They've had plenty of time to work on it. I know many people love their Blackberrys but to me they are rather utilitarian in appearance and limited in functionality due in large part to the small screen. The HTC Diamond has a VGA screen but it's quite a bit smaller than the Samsung Omnia never mind an iPhone. It has a great touch screen implementation but THE SCREEN IS TOO SMALL!

I think what I'm trying to say is that screen size is a major factor for me in selecting a smart phone. I have moved with the times. I started with Psion Organisers then moved to the original Palm Pilot and it's successor the Palm Pilot Pro.
I think I went through a couple of iPAQ models next before buying a Dell Axim X50v then adding a Dell Axim 51v.
I actually bought the X51v as a back up when I heard that Dell were pulling out of this market. As it happens the X50v has plodded on manfully since 2003 and I never really needed the back up X51v.
I swore I would never buy a converged device (PDA with built in phone).
When Apple started selling the 2G iPhone cheap ahead of the 3G launch, I bought one for my son and unlocked it so I could add a range of third party programmes and use a SIM from a different carrier. I liked it so much I went out and bought another for myself. I absoluely love the screen - once you've had a big one you'll never go back...
What sold it for me is the huge array of 3rd party programmes now available for the iPhone through both official and unofficial channels.
I kinda fancy a WM based device but it must have a good screen.

If you are still awake now give yourself 10 geek points and a pat on the back...

texting with touch screen SUCKS
+1

But I have been told that texting on the iPhone is much better than most touch screen phones. Unfortunately, the iPhone is another device we don't get here in Korea.

Yes, the iphone is just fine for entering text. That's what I'm doing now. Because the screen is so very much bigger than say, a Blackberry, there is room for a whopping big on screen, touch sensitive keyboard. You'd have to have fingers like shovels to suck with it!

It's not the size of the screen that is the issue -- for me, the issue with a touch screen is the lack of a tactile feedback on your fingertips. Yes, the iPhone's screen is slick but until they can figure out a way to let me "feel" the keys, I'd rather use something else for typing messages...
