I am a new member to this fourm and just purchased a 2005 545i. I downloaded the latest version of software for my BlackBerry and it interfaces great with the car via Bluetooth. My address book does not move to the car which I uderstand is a well documented problem but I am unable to activte the voice recognition phone book mentioned in the manual. Is this due to the address book problem I am having with the BB or a flaw in the idrive system?

There are two different "voice recognition phone books" available in the current model-year E60s: one is standard with the BMW Assist/Bluetooth option; the other (and more sophisticated) version is integrated with the optional Navigation system.
The standard version requires training using the "Save Name" command and is limited to 50 names. I believe the enhanced version that comes with the Navigation system can actually parse your speech, then match it to a name stored in the address book transferred from your phone to the car.
I am using a Blackberry 7100t in my '06 530 and the names I have stored with the "Save Name" command work as advertised. Since the current version of Blackberry software does not allow Bluetooth data transfers, the 7100t's address book won't transfer to the car and the more sophisticated capabilities of the Navigation system's voice recognition software can't be used.
RIM, the maker of Blackberry devices, is supposedly looking at enabling Bluetooth data transfers but its corporate and government customers have been opposing it because of security concerns.
