I must say I am skeptical as I have been in the past about air filters which (also) suck up internal warm ambient air, but will give them a chance to prove it on the dyno with a before and after run.

Will hopefully have some results in November.
The test results don't lie Andy. I'll show them to you at the meet!
As stated, the results on the Dyno are a gain over the whole rpm-range of about 7 HP at the rearwheels(!), but the temp difference on the Dyno was significantly more than during a test on the road. Which means that on the road the gain in HP is even more! But an exact figure is by that means not possible to measure.

well ppl that got the afe intake, got similar if not better numbers... plus the looks with the afe... its a obvious choice.

Than again like you said, its just a prototype...
Well, I tried to get things cleared by searching the forums.
Actually, the AFE claims to get an increase in RWHP, but it is hard to find evidence e.g. before- and after- Dyno's.
The only evidence I found is: hardly any gain or even a loss!
Click
another click
So, I can't find any proof of similar or even better numbers!?
Apart from the looks, so NO obvious choice.

For reputation, K&N is represented in I think all motorised sports! I have never seen a aFe decal on a racing car or motorcycle!
So I have more thrust in a very professional and dedicated company like K&N than aFe.

It is easy for me to say, because I have been there. They are very serious about developping and testing their new products.
For me, an obvious choice

Different engines will gain different power. At the end of the day if you take off the stock restrictive air box, and whether you slap on a AFE kit, KN FILTER, or a $15 filter off ebay diy thing, you will get increase in numbers regardless. Maybe one filter has better flow over the other, but the extra 1-2 hp i dont think you will notice. Just after doing such a mod, you feel bit more tq. maybe its just a placebo effect

You are probabely right. The little gain in power in our car might be too small to notice.
But knowing the engine is better able to breath, gives me a good feeling

The other thing is the sound, it should be better hiswell.

So, NO disadvantages, just (maybe minor) advantages And another thing, for me it's free!!!

The major thing is that it is just another mod to add to the list.
